Ray Kobayashi (dba R.K. Builders, Inc.) has built at least 500 homes in almost every subdivision in East Hawaii in the past 40 years. Four years ago, he built two luxury homes using native koa, eucalyptus, mango, sugi pine and ohia and fell in love with local woods. His inventory includes koa rocking chairs, bar stools, plant stands, a curio cabinet, koa root tables and jewelry boxes. When he got hold of some milo wood that carpenter bees bored through, the “Bumble Bee Art/Wise Guy” series was born. Created from what he sees in each piece of wood he works with, he gives each of his curiosity pieces names like “Mom, I think I stepped on a nail again!”, “Gloria, you really crack me up”, and “The Original Hawaiian Punch.” Prolific with a wild sense of humor, that’s Ray.
